About
My work revolves around two major orientations: on the one hand, the analysis of the ancient décorum in its context (architectural, geographical, chronological, sociological…) and, on the other hand, the study of the diffusion of images in the Greco-Roman world. Iconography and décor are apprehended in interaction, within different degrees of interpretation, as the turning points of communication strategies in particularly heterogeneous and hierarchical societies. The different axes constituting the framework of this project allow for just as many experimentations opportunities for a reflexion both diachronic and synchronic on the diffusion of décors and images between geographical and sociological spheres generally studied in a very dichotomous way (public/private, domestic/funeral, masses/elite, etc.). The various facets of the project, closely articulated with one another, require a large range of methods, from art history to history, philology and sociology.
My current scientific activity is articulated around two actions. Firstly, I actively contribute to the development of study and cartography of ancient décors. This involvement is evidenced by my duties of President of AFPMA (Association Française de Peinture Murale Antique). I also work in developing synthesis. On the international level, I lead the “Painted décors of Herculaneum: images in their context” research project. The heart of the project is based on the realization of a repertory of the painted décors of Herculaneum that will constitute a unique source of analysis and reflection on the problematic of diffusion of pictural and iconographical models within the ancient societies.
Career :
During the preparation of my Phd, I was recruited as a member of the Casa de Velázquez, (Madrid), where I finished writing my thesis, defended in December 2005 at theUniversité de Paris IV-Sorbonne (Pr. J.-C. Balty dir.). In May 2006, I was elected Maître de Conférences (Associate Professor) in Archaeology and History of Ancient Art at the University of Toulouse II-Le Mirail. This is where I exercise now my activities as a teacher and researcher in TRACES laboratory (CNRS, UMR 5608).
